    Infrared photographs of mouse gnawing through the dowel and escaping from a transparent version of the dolognawmeter. (a) Overhead view of mouse gnawing through dowel. With training, mice learn to gnaw through the dowel in a “V” shaped pattern. (b) Frontal view of mouse in the dolognawmeter gnawing through a dowel. (c) Inferior view of mouse gnawing through dowel. Note that the mouse does not consume the detritus (white flakes) from the dowel. (d) Once the mouse gnaws through the dowel, springs immediately retract the severed dowel and allow the mouse to exit the dolognawmeter (see supplemental video).
